About Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS)
Yale Young African Scholars is an intensive pre-university program that supports academically motivated African students during a critical stage of their educational journey.
YYAS brings together students from diverse backgrounds across Africa, creating a vibrant learning environment that encourages collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and cross-cultural exchange for all. Participants engage with challenging academic content while developing leadership skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Program Goals and Learning Experience
The core goal of the YYAS is to prepare students for success in higher education while nurturing socially responsible leaders. Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to think critically, communicate effectively, and explore their academic interests in depth.

YYAS Summer 2026 Program Offerings
In Summer 2026, YYAS will offer two distinct program options. Students may apply to the program that best fits their needs and circumstances.
1. Online College Prep Workshop
The Online College Prep Workshop is a fully virtual program designed to help students prepare academically and strategically for university.
The workshop focuses on:
- Academic skill-building
- College and university readiness
- Understanding higher education systems
- Preparing for future academic challenges
2. Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya)
The Residential Leadership Summit is an in-person program hosted at a campus in Kenya. This immersive experience combines academic learning with leadership development in a collaborative residential setting.
Participants will:
- Engage in face-to-face seminars and workshops
- Participate in leadership and team-building activities
- Interact closely with peers from across Africa
- Experience campus life in an African academic environment
Program Format and Delivery
Both YYAS programs utilize a blend of academic instruction, interactive discussions, and collaborative learning.
Cost and Accessibility
One of the key strengths of YYAS is its commitment to accessibility. There are no tuition fees required to participate in either the Online College Prep Workshop or the Residential Leadership Summit.
Important Scholarship Information
Applicants should note that YYAS is not an undergraduate or graduate scholarship program. Participation in YYAS does not provide direct financial support for university tuition.

Yale Young African Scholars is a proud member of the HALI Access Network, a global initiative that supports access to higher education. The program also continues to receive support from The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.
YYAS was modeled after its sister program, Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS), and continues to operate under the YYGS umbrella.
