YYAS Summer 2026 Program Offerings

In Summer 2026, YYAS will offer two distinct program options. Students may apply to the program that best fits their needs and circumstances. However, applicants should note that students can only be admitted to one program, not both.

1. Online College Prep Workshop

The Online College Prep Workshop is a fully virtual program designed to help students prepare academically and strategically for university. Delivered through online platforms such as Zoom, this program allows students to participate from anywhere in Africa.

The workshop focuses on:

  • Academic skill-building
  • College and university readiness
  • Understanding higher education systems
  • Preparing for future academic challenges

This option is ideal for students who prefer a flexible, online learning environment while still benefiting from high-quality academic instruction.

2. Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya)

The Residential Leadership Summit is an in-person program hosted at a campus in Kenya. This immersive experience combines academic learning with leadership development in a collaborative residential setting.

Participants will:

  • Engage in face-to-face seminars and workshops
  • Participate in leadership and team-building activities
  • Interact closely with peers from across Africa
  • Experience campus life in an African academic environment

Each year, the residential program is hosted in a different African country, offering students a unique opportunity to learn in diverse settings.

Program Format and Delivery

Both YYAS programs utilize a blend of academic instruction, interactive discussions, and collaborative learning. Online platforms such as Zoom are used extensively to support seminars, lectures, and group sessions.

All relevant program details, including schedules, participation requirements, and learning platforms, are communicated directly to students who are admitted to the program. This ensures that participants are fully informed and prepared before the program begins.

Cost and Accessibility

One of the key strengths of YYAS is its commitment to accessibility. There are no tuition fees required to participate in either the Online College Prep Workshop or the Residential Leadership Summit.

By removing financial barriers, YYAS ensures that talented students from diverse economic backgrounds across Africa have the opportunity to benefit from the program.

Important Scholarship Information

Applicants should note that YYAS is not an undergraduate or graduate scholarship program. Participation in YYAS does not provide direct financial support for university tuition.

However, students interested in scholarships and funding opportunities for higher education are encouraged to explore the YYAS resources page, which provides information on a wide range of global scholarship programs and funding options.

Institutional Support and Partnerships

Yale Young African Scholars is a proud member of the HALI Access Network, a global initiative that supports access to higher education. The program also continues to receive support from The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.

YYAS was modeled after its sister program, Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS), and continues to operate under the YYGS umbrella. This connection ensures that YYAS maintains high academic standards and a strong commitment to educational excellence.

Apply for YYAS 2026

Eligible African secondary school students are encouraged to carefully review the YYAS 2026 program overview and submit their applications within the specified timelines. YYAS offers a transformative opportunity for students who are motivated to excel academically, grow as leaders, and contribute meaningfully to Africa’s future.
