Role Purpose
The Head of Digital will form part of the Kenya and Somalia Communications Team based at the British High Commission Nairobi. The role is responsible for leading and managing all digital communications for both the British High Commission Nairobi and the British Embassy Mogadishu. This includes driving high-impact digital content, overseeing multiple social media channels, and supporting internal communications across the mission.
Key Responsibilities
Digital Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the development and delivery of digital content and channel management for Kenya and Somalia communications work.
- Develop and implement a content and channel strategy for seven official social media platforms, ensuring messaging is creative, consistent, and impactful.
- Provide strategic direction on digital priorities and ensure alignment with wider communications objectives.
Content Creation & Publishing
- Oversee the creation of high-quality digital content, including photography, videography, and edited materials.
- Coordinate timely updates and publishing on GOV.UK, ensuring accuracy and adherence to the GOV.UK style guide.
- Support the planning and execution of digital campaigns that enhance visibility and engagement.
Partnership Engagement
- Build effective relationships with national and regional communication partners to increase reach and collaborate on joint content.
- Work closely with internal teams, UK Government departments, and external stakeholders to produce coordinated digital outputs.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Conduct continuous monitoring and evaluation of digital platforms, analysing engagement, audience sentiment, and channel performance.
- Produce quarterly reports for senior leadership, including Ambassadors, highlighting trends, results, and recommendations for improvement.
- Use data insights to refine strategies and drive better outcomes across all channels.
Team Leadership & Capability Development
- Manage two Digital Communications Assistants and support them in delivering high-quality outputs.
- Identify digital skills gaps within the wider team and lead upskilling initiatives, training sessions, and knowledge sharing.
- Oversee the management and procurement of digital equipment used by the Communications Team.

Crisis Communications
- Serve on the crisis communications roster for both Nairobi and Mogadishu, providing strong digital and media leadership during high-pressure situations.
- Support the Deputy Head of Team and occasionally deputise for the Head of Team when required.
Internal Communications
- Oversee internal communication channels, including digital screens and staff bulletins, ensuring timely dissemination of information.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Professional experience in media or communications.
- Strong understanding of the digital and social media landscape in Kenya, Somalia, and the surrounding region.
- Practical skills in photography, videography, and use of editing software.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluating digital performance, particularly on META and X platforms.
- High proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Proven management and team-leadership experience.
